SPMT 130 - Introduction to Sport Management (Fall)

COURSE DESCRIPTION 

The course is designed for the individual interested in pursuing a career in the sport management field and introduces the theoretical foundations and applied areas of sports management.  


SPMT 130 will incorporate fundamentals and principles applied to the sport industry: concepts and functions of management, organizational theories, human resources, integrated issues and current trends. Students will be asked to use their critical thinking skills and to apply diverse perspectives in their understanding of course content and in their class contributions.  This course will be highly engaged in group discussion, case analysis, and individual projects.  


COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. To develop an understanding of the sport in society and the operations of sport organizations through the application of organizational theories, managerial conceptualizations, and human resource management.
  2. To provide knowledge of the various areas and occupations within the sport industry.
  3. To develop an initial understanding of decision making within the sport industry. 
  4. To be exposed to the history of sport, how sport was/is impacted by society, and how sport influenced society.

COURSE OUTCOMES

After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the broad range of career fields within the sport industry.
  2. Begin the process of selecting a career field within the sport industry for future pursuit.
  3. Critically analyze specific areas of the sport industry that are of interest to each student.
  4. Identify the concepts and functions (planning, leading, organizing, and controlling) of management as they relate to various sectors of the sport industry.
  5. Explain various areas in sport management, including: sport finance, sport economics, sport analytics, sport sponsorship, sport licensing, accounting, and budgeting.
  6. Explain the governance of sport in the United States.
  7. Describe the issues regarding diversity in sport.
  8. Understand how different eras of sport reflected American society.
