Student of the Month: Each month, Sport Management Director Scott Hirko will select a Defiance College Sport Management student as its "Student of the Month." This will be at the sole discretion of Dr. Hirko, with relation to a student's performance to his/her own education, impact to the community, and overall serving as an Ambassador to the College. Students will be invited to a lunch with Dr. Hirko, as well as academic performance award if enrolled in Dr. Hirko's classes (a bonus to their grade).

Brandon Unverferth
Unverferth is from Ottawa, Ohio, in Putnam County. He has a
self-designed major in "Sport Communication" in which he is working with
faculty in Communication, English, and Sport Management. He is a
leader in the new Sport Analytics class, SPMT 350. Unverferth is the
sports editor for DC's online newspaper, the Defender and also works in
DC Athletics' Sports Information office. Unverferth aspires to become a
sports journalist for a major sports network such as ESPN, CBS, or FOX
and focus on college football.

Hailey Krawczyk
Hailey is a senior from Sylvania, Ohio. As a Carolyn M. Small Honors student, Hailey has been on the Dean’s list every term during her academic career at Defiance, including in March 2022. While working as a Resident Assistant (RA), Hailey is also a member of Campus Activities Board (CAB), serves on the Student Senate as Student Senate President for the 2021-2022 Academic Year, and covers sports for The Defender, Defiance College’s Online Newspaper.

McKenzie Cooper
McKenzie is a sophomore from Greentown, Indiana. She is a guard for the Jackets women's basketball team, and has played in 28 games, logging 18 minutes and averaging 6.6 points per game. Cooper also was a leader in helping market the HCAC Conference Track & Field Championships for her MKT 350 class in Spring 2022. Her future is to work in sports marketing.

Darrien Brooks
Darrien is a junior from Detroit, Michigan. He is a defensive midfielder for the Jackets men's soccer team, and has played in 49 games, started 29, with a goal in 2021 (against Transylvania). He's a stalwart on the defensive side, averaging 59 minutes for the Jackets last year each time he was on the pitch. Darrien is the school's point person to help market the HCAC Track Championships at Defiance on February 19. His future aims at becoming a college soccer coach.

Lucas Thomeier
Luke is a graduate student from Wickliffe, Ohio. He is also an outfielder for the Yellow Jacket baseball team (player profile). Lucas graduated from the Sport Management program in Spring 2020 and was named the Sport Management Student of the Year.
