SPMT 220 - Sport Economics/Finance (Fall)

COURSE DESCRIPTION
SPMT 220 is designed for the individual interested in pursuing a career in the sport management field and introduces the theoretical foundations and applied areas of sports management.  This course applies fundamental economic and financial principles to the sport industry and focuses on the concepts and practices of effective financial planning and management.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand key economic and financial concepts related to the sports industry.
  2. To critically analyze financial constructs and their usage in the sports industry.
  3. To become proficient in discussing economic and financial issues within the sports industry.

COURSE OUTCOMES
After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze and create a budget; 
  2. Use Microsoft Excel to create, analyze, and present budgets;
  3. Comprehend the principles of financial analysis such as financial statements, forecasts, and planning, and time value of money;
  4. Explain how to obtain funding, such as capital stocks, bonds, and tax increment financing;  
  5. Understand the role of politics in economics;  
  6. Explain the economic concept of monopolies and competitive balance in both college and professional sports;
  7. Describe supply and demand in the sport industry.
